When Did You Last Notice God?

“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” — Psalm 46:10.

When did you last notice God?

Not merely believe in Him. Not sing about Him on Sunday. Not mention Him in a prayer before a meal or acknowledge Him when life takes an unexpected turn. When did you actually stop and notice Him?

It is possible to believe deeply in God and still move through much of life without paying much attention to Him. We can know the Bible, attend church, listen to sermons, and even serve faithfully—while hurrying past evidence of God’s presence all around us.

Perhaps that is because we are busy.

We wake up with somewhere to go, something to do, someone to call, a message to answer, a bill to pay, or a problem to solve. Before our feet hit the floor, our minds may already be racing through the day’s agenda. And if our phones are involved, we can be informed about the latest national crisis, celebrity scandal, weather emergency, and the lunch choices of people we barely remember from high school before we’ve had our first cup of coffee.

Meanwhile, God is still there.

The sunrise happens. A child laughs. Someone unexpectedly encourages us. A prayer is answered in a way we didn’t anticipate. We experience a moment of beauty so striking that, for just a second, everything else becomes quiet.

And then we move on.

The Bible repeatedly calls us to pay attention. “Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I wasn’t even aware of it!” (Genesis 28:16). What an honest confession. God was present before Jacob noticed Him. His awareness didn’t create God’s presence; it simply opened Jacob’s eyes to what was already true.

How often we could say the same thing. Surely the Lord was in that conversation, and I was not aware of it. Surely the Lord was present in that disappointment, protecting me from something I couldn’t yet see. Surely the Lord was at work through that person who called at exactly the right moment. Surely the Lord was speaking through that Scripture I almost skipped because I was in a hurry. Surely the Lord was in this ordinary day, and I was not aware of it.

We often expect God to make His presence impossible to miss. We want the burning bush, the parting sea, or at least a fairly obvious message written in the clouds. But much of God’s work comes quietly. Elijah discovered that God was not in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a gentle whisper.

The God who holds the universe together is also present in hospital rooms, traffic jams, kitchen conversations, golf courses, grocery stores, ordinary Tuesdays, and moments when nothing particularly interesting seems to be happening. Where have you seen unexpected goodness? Where have you been helped, protected, encouraged, or reminded of truth? What beauty have you hurried past? What answer to prayer have you dismissed as coincidence?

You may discover that God has been much more present in your day than you realized. The question is not simply, “Where is God?” Perhaps a better question is: “Have I been paying attention?”
