Week 3 Questions For Northstar Groups

Introduction: On Sunday, I encouraged everyone to move toward generosity by following two principles that people who do well with their riches invariably practice. The first is to be strategically generous. Wisdom and experience have taught us that generosity, like so many other things in life, is most effective when thoughtfully undertaken. Using our head and heart will make our generosity go further. And the second is to be sacrificially generous. Some of us give back to God through our tithe. We also give with our time and abilities. But most of our giving is done with a certain level of convenience, rather than sacrificially, or in other words, at a level where we feel it. Or at a level where we need God to step in. Sacrifice by definition means: to give up something of value for the sake of something of greater value.

Something To Talk About:
The most talked about subject in God’s Word is about money. The word “Give,” is printed 811 times in the Bible. I know that God is looking for avenues to bless His people, if they would be obedient and give to God what is His. You will never be financially blessed in God’s eyes if you don’t tithe. God doesn’t promise to bless the Christian, He does promise to bless those who give. Luke 6:38 says, “ For if you give, you will get! Your gift will return to you in full and overflowing measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over. Whatever measure you use to give—large or small—will be used to measure what is given back to you.”

Discussion Questions:
1. Read 2 Corinthians 9. What reasons do you see for being generous?
2. Do I need to be prosperous before I can be generous?
3. What has your personal experience been with strategic or sacrificial giving? Do we need to do both? What do you think of tithing?
4. How do you react when you hear that everything you own belongs to God?
5. What are the obstacles to taking the 90 day tithe challenge? (We commit to you that if you tithe for three months and God doesn’t hold true to His promises of blessings, we will refund 100% of your tithe. No questions asked.) What do you expect to happen if you take the challenge?

Take One Thing Home With You:
Tithing is not giving to God because it is His already. Tithing is merely redirecting God’s money, through your employer’s bank account, through your bank account, and into the church’s account so that God can use the church to continue his chain of blessings. I encourage you to take the 90-day tithe challenge. Life change doesn’t happen in a moment, but in the collection of many moments over time. It is when we are willing to take one step forward that we begin to see our options change, our circumstances alter, and we can see that God has been making us into something new. I can’t wait to hear the stories of what God is doing in our lives when we learn to be generous, when we learn how to give strategically and sacrificially.
