The River Is Already Flowing

“But Jesus replied, ‘My Father is always working, and so am I.’” — John 5:17

The image of a river already flowing is deeply reassuring.

A river doesn’t need convincing to move. It does not wake up each morning wondering whether it should continue downstream. It simply flows because something greater than itself has set it in motion. The river follows the course established for it, carrying water toward its destination.

That picture offers a powerful reminder for us as believers: God is already at work. The river is already flowing.

We sometimes live as though everything depends on us. We pray as if God is waiting for us to persuade Him to act. We serve as though the success of His purposes depends entirely on our ability. We worry about the future as though God has not already gone ahead of us.

But Scripture repeatedly reminds us that God is not standing on the sidelines waiting for us to get everything organized. Before Moses ever stood before Pharaoh, God was already working. Before David faced Goliath, God had already prepared David through years of ordinary faithfulness. Before the disciples understood what Jesus was doing, God was already unfolding His redemptive plan.

The river was already flowing.

Sometimes we become frustrated because we cannot see where the river is going. We want a map. We want guarantees. We want to know what is around the next bend. We want God to explain the entire route before we take the next step.

But rivers rarely reveal their entire journey to the person standing on the bank.

Faith means trusting the One who knows the destination.

Our role is not to become the river. Our role is to follow the One who controls its course.

This also gives us freedom from the exhausting burden of thinking everything depends on us. We can be faithful without believing we have to control the outcome. We can serve without needing recognition. We can pray without demanding immediate answers. We can obey without knowing exactly where obedience will lead.

The river is already flowing.

Maybe today you feel as though nothing is happening. Perhaps your prayers seem unanswered, your circumstances confusing, or your efforts insignificant. You may wonder whether God is doing anything at all.

Remember the river. What you can see is not the whole story. God may be working beneath the surface, around the next bend, through circumstances you do not yet understand, or in ways you will recognize only later.

So today, don’t spend all your energy trying to make the river flow. Trust God. Watch for His movement. Listen for His direction. Take the next faithful step.

2. What would it look like this week to stop trying to control the entire course of the river and instead trust God enough to take the next faithful step?
