I’ve recently re-fallen in love with a song I’ve had on my ipod for a while. You know – that song that rocks you to your core and you can’t help but want to change the world when you hear it. It’s definitely one of those for me.
Pat Green sings about all the things that he’s for. And it makes me smile because it’s all the little things that most people forget about day to day. He talks about wildflowers in the window, mechanics you can trust, soaking up wisdom from an old man, turning off the tv, and leaving grudges in the dust. Man – how often do we live life so fast that we forget about how precious each of these things are? I do it every day.
But in special moments when I’m alone and left to think – I think about these things and how much they’ve changed as I’ve grown closer to God. I used to be for things like nice cars, big houses, tons of friends, lots of money, nice things, etc.
But now because of Jesus and His love, this is what I’m for:
-People putting their hope and trust in Jesus
-Families who choose to live life together
-Laughing until it hurts
-Wildflowers just because
-The smallest kid being picked first
-Wearing no makeup
–Rolling out of bed and going about my day
-Fishing with a cane pole
-Having a job
-Finding a dollar in your pocket
-Letting someone out in a car line
-Face to face conversations
-A pretty sunset
-Picking up a hitchhiker
-Giving someone a gift
-The kid that sits in the back dying for someone to notice
-Opportunities for humilty
-Making mistakes and learning from them
My heart smiles as I think of these things. God is so good and he has done a work in me. If you are chasing after things of this world I want to remind you that he wants more for you! What would you do if all of those things were stripped from you? Who would you be? How would you respond?
God’s word says in Ecclesiastes 2:11, “Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.” Don’t allow yourself to dwell on things that don’t matter. Things that do not bring glory to the Father. But set your heart and mind on Jesus and allow Him to reign over it. I promise that you will be amazed at God’s goodness and favor. He is so worthy.
My favorite part of Pat Green’s song “What I’m For” is this:
“For the shy kid in the corner
Afraid to ask the girl to dance
For the ex-con outta prison
Who just wants a second chance
For the inner city teacher
With her heart stuck in her throat
Who can still see God in every child
And never gives up hope”
Let’s strive to be about things that matter. I encourage you to stop and ask yourself – what are you for? Ask God to help you discover what really matters.
