Week 3 Sermon Questions For Groups

Come To Worship:  Pour Out Your Heart to God

Introduction:

If we are completely honest, when someone mentions worship, most people think of music. Worship is the part of the church service when the band plays, we sing along and praise God. However, if we search God’s Word faithfully, we will quickly see that worship is much more than songs. Worship is what we were created for, it’s what we’ll spend eternity doing, and it encompasses our hearts as well as our actions. God is seeking true worshippers (John 4:23-24). This four-week teaching series looks at the different ways to worship God. The first week we talked about lifting up holy hands to God. In all of our churches we lifted hands in an act of worship to God. Last week we talked about bringing our gifts. This week’s message is on a not so obvious form of worship. This week is about pouring out our hearts to God as an act of worship. We’re not going to just worship from our mind, but we’re going to worship from the depth of our soul.

Bottom Line: Pour out your heart to God.

Something To Talk About:

Everything changed in a moment. When Jesus was born, He gave us the chance to be known, accepted, and forgiven. When we experience His love, we can’t help but come to worship and pour out our hearts to God as an act of worship. We can do this by:

  1. Remember God’s faithfulness in the past: Sometimes the future seems impossible, the present isn’t all that good and we don’t want to even get into our past. We know what we need to do, but we find ourselves stuck. We are frustrated or discouraged or have lost confidence in our abilities to make things better. It’s in these times that we have to lean into scripture and remember who God is and remember His faithfulness. That may require us to look back at our lives and realize that God’s fingerprints are all over them. To take time to look back and see the ways that God has rescued and redeemed us time and time again. We see God’s faithfulness in His blessings and the ways that he chooses to grow us. We see it in our testimonies and the way he has rescued and redeemed us when we were down to our last dollar, or when sickness struck or when relationships were frayed to the breaking point. We all have events in our lives where the only possible explanation is God. And what’s more, we know and trust that God will be faithful again in the future.
  2. Trust in God’s power for your future: Sometime in this life, you will feel as if God is a million miles away. But then you feel His presence and His power in your life in real ways. The Bible says in Psalm 22:3:“Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.” This is the mystery and the miracle of the breakthrough power and presence of God when we worship. Some of us are going through the motions depending upon our own strength and completely forgetting or losing sight of the fact we serve an all powerful God. Pouring out our heart in worship is an admission that we are weak and in need of God’s strength. When we worship, the invisible God is at work doing invisible and powerful things. We get realigned, refreshed and refueled; we find unspeakable joy and indescribable peace. We discover the breakthrough strength of God, which enables us to walk in the truth, live in His presence and see Him fight our battles for us. It is then that we can see both the beauty and power of God working in our lives.

Questions:

  1. Talk about the last time it was just really hard to worship. How did you break through?
  2. What does “pour out your heart to God” mean to you? Do you ever cry out to God and really pour out your heart?
  3. Do you have a hard time remembering His faithfulness? Share some ways you’ve seen God’s faithfulness in the past. What difficulties in your life do you need to surrender to God’s faithfulness?
  4. What are some things that you need to pour out to God? Why have you been holding onto those things so closely?
  5. Do you trust that God has an amazing future for you? Which parts of your future do you need to entrust to God’s power?

Take One Thing Home with You:

Christian worship is often thought of as the music portion of a church service – people singing songs to God, heads back, eyes closed, and hands raised in the air as they sing. Christian worship happens when we sing to God, whether in church or alone – in our cars or in the shower. If our desire is to please the heart of God, it is worship, no matter where the location or how many are involved. But God is after the heart. Yes, He wants us to do right but He also wants us to see Him in the right way.

True worship, in other words, is defined by the priority we place on who God is in our lives and where God is on our list of priorities. True worship is a matter of the heart expressed through a lifestyle of holiness. We worship God because He is God. We love Him because He loved us first.  Every decision we make should be an act of worship. Worship reminds us of our position before God and His worthiness and position above us. Worship is for God’s glory, praise, and honor.
