“But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.'” 1 Samuel 16:7
Okay, I’ll admit I tried on four different outfits before I decided on my OOTD (outfit of the day). I’ve always been a girly girl for as long as I can remember. I’m talking – painted nails, bows, dresses, and lip gloss. It is said that I had over 100 dresses in my closet before I was even born. My momma had her hands full to say the least.
Although I may come off confident on the outside deep down I am one of the most insecure girls you will ever meet. As I grow older I realize I am not alone. In fact, I’m not sure I have one friend or know one female that absolutely loves everything about themselves. And even if they say that they do – they’re totally lying.
Why is this? Even when we’re the smallest – have the best hair day – get told we’re stunning – have friends who constantly build us up – it’s never good enough. We work harder, eat less, run faster, or simply give up. The answer is simple:
We’re being like Samuel. Looking at the wrong things. Walking farther and farther from God’s direction and into the world. Ladies, be careful. The world will chew you up and spit you out faster than you can blink an eye. There will always be someone faster than you. Smarter than you. Prettier than you. Better than you. You will literally live in constant defeat if you let man define who you are. Truth is, God has so much more for us.
He looks at the heart.
Think about it. When do you feel the most beautiful truly? These are some things I could come up with. Feel free to add your own:
-When you hear the words, “I love you.”
-When your best friend/partner prays with you.
-When a family member tells you how much you mean to them.
-When your child gives you a big wet kiss.
-When you’re rocking sweatpants and an old t shirt.
-When someone tells you something encouraging about yourself.
-When you feel valued.
-When you help someone in need.
-When you feel at peace.
-When you laugh so hard you cry.
The list could go on and on. Isn’t it interesting that none of these have to do with what you look like? But they are things that make you who you are. I have learned that the healthier my relationship is with Jesus the healthier I am all around. On the outside and the inside.
I remember when I began a relationship with the Lord and how I would pray for many things including my husband and his family. I asked God to make the number one thing that makes him love me more than anything is my heart. This was a huge prayer because I was very selfish, very insecure, and very far from having a heart for God. Praise God for his grace and compassion! Each day as I draw closer to him he breaks my heart for what breaks his. He has given me a heart that is filled with compassion, grace, joy, encouragement, kindness, goodness, gentleness, openness, etc. I’m still growing into the heart he created me to have. I am so grateful. And I pray that one day my husband and family will adore me for who I am on the inside.
I challenge you today to search your heart. Is God proud of the woman that you are? Do you radiate his kindness and love? Are you a woman that people are drawn to?
Let God mold you into the beauty that only He can. It’s worth it. xo
